One case study illustrates how applying preventive maintenance (PM) optimization within an APM sustainability framework can drive transformation across large, complex operations. The project began by developing a clear charter and forming cross-functional working teams. Leaders provided straightforward direction, focusing on fundamentals to ensure consistency and clarity across all groups.
The approach used failure mode analysis to identify gaps, highlight task duplication, and uncover inefficiencies in maintenance practices. Teams reviewed historical data, technical documentation, and their own experience to create a comprehensive failure list. This step-by-step method ensured that all critical issues were captured and addressed.
At the same time, digital tools and management systems were developed to support data collection, validation, and long-term strategy adjustments. Every event—from planned outages to unexpected breakdowns—was analyzed to determine whether it was an acceptable outcome or an opportunity for improvement. Over time, this process built a culture of continuous improvement, where each lesson directly informed updates to asset strategies.
The project demonstrates how structured maintenance optimization can break the cycle of reactive maintenance and build proactive, sustainable practices.
