Sea Terminal Doubles Capacity with Data Optimizer™/Strategy Optimizer™

Written by Ken Tan | Sep 14, 2023

Nexus Global supported Canada’s largest coal and potash shipping port through a multi‑phase expansion that doubled capacity. Using Data Optimizer™ for master data and Strategy Optimizer™ for equipment strategies, the program improved planning, reporting, and reliability during the upgrade.

The Challenge: Scale Without Chaos

During a multi‑million‑dollar expansion, the terminal needed clean, standardized asset data and risk‑based maintenance strategies to scale safely without disrupting operations.

“Currently the organization has a very flat and incomplete data structure,” confirms Doug Robey, President of Nexus Global. “This leads to many unknowns of what equipment exists in the plant, as well as increased maintenance costs by having to expedite materials for repairs. Additionally, the current CMMS is lacking any historical data for decision making, because the asset structure is incomplete.”

What We Implemented

Data Optimizer™ → Hierarchy, Classes/Attributes, Code Sets

  • Rebuild asset hierarchy aligned to reporting and maintenance

  • Define equipment classes with required attributes and units

  • Normalize work, failure, and cause codes (ISO 14224 aligned)

  • Validate and cleanse records with picklists and rules

Strategy Optimizer™ → FMEA/PM Optimization & Deployment

  • Perform FMEA/PM optimization on critical systems

  • Generate role‑ready job plans with frequencies and instructions

  • Rapidly deploy strategies to like assets to shorten time to value

Governance → Owners, Validation Rules, Change Control

  • Assign data owners and stewards

  • Add validation rules and dropdowns in CMMS/EAM

  • Publish a change log to prevent drift

“Through our partnerships, we can provide a seamless solution that delivers operational readiness and excellence,” adds Robey. “By utilizing our APM Optimizer software, the client will be able to conduct metadata searches, make decisions using accurate data, develop a materials stocking strategy, and implement detailed maintenance strategies. In turn, the client can expect transparency, reduced long-term labor, materials, and expediting costs, as well as improved quality planned maintenance.”

Results & Operational Impact (During Expansion)

Faster planning, more reliable cost/uptime reporting, and smoother commissioning—helping the terminal realize capacity gains with fewer surprises.

Why This Matters for Ports & Bulk Terminals

Standardized data and deployable strategies protect availability on conveyors, stacker‑reclaimers, ship‑loaders, and rolling stock—while keeping safety and throughput targets on track.
