New Mexico’s largest power generation producer engaged Nexus Global to develop a Data Strategy Standard and configure a complete asset hierarchy and master data. The result: cleaner data, better EAM adoption, and faster ROI—supported by APM methods, tools, and coaching.

Client Challenge (EAM ROI stalled by poor data)

The utility’s EAM value was constrained by inconsistent asset hierarchies, incomplete master data, and uneven code usage—making reporting and planning unreliable.

With over half a million customers, reliability is a top priority for the power company. "Maintaining reliability is an ongoing process, and we are constantly investing to ensure that our thousands of miles of transmission and distribution lines, and hundreds of substations can continue to provide the electricity our customers rely on,” notes an executive leader. “It all starts by knowing what we have and getting our master data correct."

Our Approach (Data Strategy Standard + Build the Right Data)

Asset Hierarchy Design & Governance

  • Design hierarchy for maintenance reporting; publish naming & roll-up rules

  • Assign data owners; implement change control and audits

Master Data Model: Classes, Attributes, and Naming

  • Define equipment classes with required attributes and units

  • Standardize naming patterns; validate with dropdowns/picklists

Code Sets for Work, Failure, and Cause (ISO 14224 Aligned)

  • Curate short, owned code lists; require closeout coding

  • Train on failure vs. cause; weekly reviews for compliance

EAM/CMMS Configuration and User Adoption Support

  • Configure picklists, templates, and closeout checklists

  • Coach planners and supervisors to sustain discipline

“Through initial discussions, it was apparent the client’s current EAM system was not delivering as promised,” explains Nexus Global CEO, Larry Olson. “Rather than the EAM working for them, the team was working for the EAM. They required an immediate turnaround of the situation to make the EAM work as intended. Our recommendation was to develop a data standard for the whole organization.”

Outcomes (Efficiency, Data Quality, and ROI)

Expect faster work planning, more accurate cost rollups, and reliable KPI reporting (MTBF/MTTR, backlog, bad actors)—driving higher adoption and visible ROI from the EAM investment.

"By applying our strategic approach to Asset Performance Management (APM), the uncertainty of what field assets were maintained will now be transparent within the client’s EAM. Additionally, the data structure will be built in accordance with a globally recognized KKS (Identification System for Power Stations) standard," confirmed Larry Olson.

Lessons Learned for Power Generation

  • Build hierarchy for maintenance—not projects

  • Keep code sets short, curated, and owned by a data steward

  • Make closeout coding mandatory; review weekly
